Tomorrow the 2019 season of great European reining gets into full swing with the continent’s second Special Event of the year.

After kicking off with the NRHA European Futurity in April, the circus comes to Cremona for the second stop on the year’s trio of major events dedicated to this sport on Italian territory. The third appointment will be the end-of-year IRHA/NRHA Futurity, already promising to replicate the glories of the event held last December, which saw this Po Valley city hosting the fourth-most important reining event in the world after the great three competitions in the US: the NRHA Futurity and Derby and the NRBC Derby.

At the IRHA/NRHA Derby featuring in the 2019 Salone del Cavallo Americano, the large oval arena at CremonaFiere will see participants competing for €110,400 in added money, an increase of €26,000 compared to the 2018 figure. The go-rounds of the Special Event, reserved for horses from 4 to 7 years, will take place between Monday and Wednesday. Following a 24-hour break, the spotlights will be back on for the big Finals on Friday (Non Pro) and Saturday night (Open). In addition, there will be the NRHA ancillary classes, valid for the World Standings at the end of the year, and the FEI Cri *** (the two Senior categories valid for selection for the European Championships in Givrins in July are scheduled for Monday and Friday, while the Junior + Young Riders competition valid for the FEI World Youth Championships will take place on Wednesday).

The ‘new entry’ to this year’s Derby Show is the Global Youth Reining Cup, the inaugural competition of a circuit conceived by Joao Marcos, owner of the Cardinal Ranch in Texas, USA. The format aims to bring together young riders from all over the world (ages 12 to 18): each country is represented by one youngster selected through its national NRHA affiliate. There will be 19 nations competing: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, France, Great Britain, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Mexico, the Netherlands, Paraguay, Poland, Spain, Thailand, Uruguay and the United States. Non-European competitors will be riding a horse kindly provided by Italian owners. The appointment is set for Saturday morning at 9 am.

The staff

As always, a top international jury will be presiding over the Derby: Dean Latimer as judges monitor, with Nic Baar (Ohio, USA), Jan Boogarts (Belgium), Paolo Carraro (Italy), Rieky Young (Netherlands) and Mark Turner (USA) in the judges’ chairs; the equipment judge will be Tiziana Volpi.

The five judges in the arena will be assisted by Federica Cattolico, Vera Eliani, Laura Ferris, Mauro Fungo and Manuela Maiocchi, while the stewards in the warm-up pens will be Alberto Ferrara, Alessandro Dezzutto and Maura Moraglione. The ‘tried and tested’ secretarial staff is again composed by Vittorio Gaetano and Federica Caimi, coordinated by Cristina Serra, while the doorman is, as always, Nick Puscas with Giorgio Mondini as dragmaster.

Live scoring and live streaming will be guaranteed respectively by Alexander Quinte of showmanager.eu and by the Andrea Bonaga studio: both can be accessed via the button on the home page www.salonedelcavallo.com.
