Trainers Committee: open letter dated January 16, 2023

We, the Italian Trainers Committee, would like to express our opinion regarding the recent decisions taken by Nrha regarding the new medication rules.

We are aware of it and we appreciate this effort by the President and his Board to try to analyze a fundamental topic that has been sidelined and left unresolved for too many years.

Having finally the courage to face it is still a tangible sign of your desire to evolve the Nrha towards a modern dimension and to move with the times in reference to animal welfare

This is our opinion: all Nrha members founded their sporting practice based on the A general rule written by Jim Willoughby on the first page of our rule book.

This has always been our vision:

  • To continue on this vision, the NRHA must fight in every direction by denying everything that can interfere with the clear evaluation of a reining performance
  • Out of respect for all the trainers who works with different aids that are not the same for everyone.
  • Out of respect for breeders who may overestimate or underestimate their products.
  • Out of respect for the judges who have to judge falsified performances and therefore with nonuniform rules for everyone all over the world

Reining has made its mark in the equestrian world for the appreciated harmony between rider and horse which is guided with one hand, with loose reins, and with the voice. Do we want to spoil the best side of reining?

Do horses listen to us because they trust us and are perfectly trained or because they are sedated?

This is what people from outside our sport will wonder.

Are the rankings of horses, riders and breeders "real"?

Could they be altered by chemical aids?

Perhaps we do not realize the damage being done to the image of reining in the world in the eyes of members, supporters, and those new to the sport, as well as sponsors.

We sincerely hope that Nrha will review these latest decisions by looking at the situation from a global perspective. A perspective that we expect from our association, that shows us that it cares to maintain its status.

Wishing you good work, we are always available for any help or opinion that could be useful for the growth and evolution of our beloved Nrha.

The association that marks our lives and those of our families and which we hope will not have any doubt on issues so fundamental to our sport.
